Hopping on Johannesburg's open-top red bus is one of the best ways to explore the city and we often receive questions about our stops, tours and tickets. To make things a little easier, we've put together a list of answers to the questions we get asked a lot.
Are there different tours available?
City Sightseeing Johannesburg has two tours: our recently launched Green Tour as well as our Red City Tour. You can also go on a two-hour extention tour to Soweto from the Apartheid Museum, which is stop 13 on the Red City Tour.
Is my ticket valid for all tours?
You only need one one-day or two-day ticket to go on both the Green Tour and the Red City Tour – just change buses at Constitution Hill (stop 5). If you'd like to go on the extention tour to Soweto, however, you'll have to buy a Red City Tour and Soweto Combo ticket that allows you access to all tours – the Green Tour, Red City Tour and the Soweto tour
How does the hop-on, hop-off system work?
You can hop off the bus at any of the stops along the way, spend some time at your chosen stops and hop on the bus again for as long as the buses are running. Just have a look at the timetable to make sure you don't miss the last bus.
At what time do the buses start and stop running?
The first bus from The Zone @ Rosebank (stop 1) leaves at 9am and then every half an hour thereafter. The first bus from Constitution Hill (stop 5) leaves at 9.45am and every half an hour thereafter. Have a look at the timetable before going on your trip.
At what time does the extention tour to Soweto depart?
There are five two-hour tours from the Apartheid Museum (stop 13) to Soweto and back every day. Departure times are 11.15am, 12.15pm, 1.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm. Have a look at the timetable.
Are tickets only valid for one day?
We have one-day and two-day tickets available for the Green Tour and Red City Tour, as well as for the Red City Tour and Soweto Combo. Two-day tickets are valid for two consecutive days. For more details and to buy tickets, click here.
Where and how can I buy tickets?
You have three options for purchasing tickets. You can buy tickets online at a discount, at the ticket office at The Zone @ Rosebank or on the bus at any of the stops with a debit or credit card.
Is the red bus accessible for people with disabilities?
We cater for wheelchair entry on the lower level of the bus.
Can I snack on the bus?
Yes, with pleasure, bring along your snacks. Alcohol is not allowed on the bus, however.
What happens if it starts raining and I'm sitting at the top of the bus?
You are welcome to move to the undercover portion in front at the top, or to the lower deck of the bus.
